School Based Programs
Girls Inc. of Tarrant County’s school-based programs are vital to inspiring and empowering girls within our community.
The impact of our partnerships with districts around Tarrant County is profound: we work together to build self-confidence, ignite passion for learning, and create pathways to future success for girls.
FOCUS TOPICS
Literacy Initiative
K-3rd grade girls develop literacy skills as well as building a love of reading. Literacy Initiative inspires girls to use reading as a tool to discover new and exciting worlds and to learn new information about topics that interest them.
Economic Literacy
By building on basic economic and financial concepts, Girls Inc. girls become familiar with money management, investment and global economics, including gender equity in income and business.
Media Literacy
With girls facing persistent media messages, Girls Inc. Media Literacy encourages girls to think critically about images and information that they see in magazines, online and in movies. This awareness increases their protective factors as girls increase their knowledge about marketing, media’s impact and online safety.
Operation Smart
Girls develop enthusiasm for and skills in science, technology, engineering, the arts and mathematics (STEAM). Through hands-on activities, girls explore, ask questions, persist and solve problems. By interacting with professionals in STEAM careers, girls come to view these careers as exciting and realistic options for themselves.
Girl Power!
A two-part program for young teens focusing on health including self-esteem, stress management, healthy relationships, health and hygiene, and pregnancy prevention. This program is incorporated into our comprehensive Girls Inc. program sites and can be conducted as a presentation to community and school groups.
Friendly PEERsuasion
Builds girls’ skills for resisting pressure to use harmful substances such as alcohol, tobacco, household chemicals and other drugs. This program also focuses on the unique pressures to abuse drugs, alcohol and tobacco for weight loss, stress management and the encouragement of positive peer influence.
Girls Beyond Bullying
Participants learn skills and strategies for physical and emotional safety in relationships, in their communities and online. Through communication skills, peer support and identifying bullying behaviors early, girls can better navigate situations where they see or are the focus of bullying.
Leadership and Community Engagement
Girls build leadership skills and create lasting social change through community engagement. With support from women in their community, girls celebrate the heritage of girls and women as leaders and social change agents as they realize their own power as community resources and trustees of the common good.
College and Career Readiness
Boost
In their senior year of high school, girls in this program are partnered with a volunteer mentor and provided in-depth college preparation programs. This program continues through the end of participant’s freshman year of college.
